Gombe Bans Scrap Metal Trade Amid Rising Vandalism, Security Concerns
The Gombe State Government has imposed an immediate ban on the scrap metal business, popularly known as Bola Jari, citing its direct link to the vandalism of public infrastructure and growing security threats across the state.
The decision was announced on Monday by the Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Barrister Zubair Muhammad Umar, following an expanded State Security Council meeting chaired by Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya.
Umar said the council reached the decision after a comprehensive security review revealed that activities of scrap metal dealers were significantly contributing to the destruction of public assets, including school facilities and other critical infrastructure.
According to him, the ban forms part of a broader set of “decisive security measures” adopted by the state to strengthen internal security and protect public property.
In a related development, the state government has introduced a mandatory profiling policy in response to evolving national and local security dynamics.
Under the new directive, all individuals seeking to relocate to Gombe State or rent accommodation are required to submit their personal details for official documentation.
The Attorney-General explained that the measure is aimed at enhancing intelligence gathering, enabling security agencies to properly identify residents and track suspicious movements within the state.
Addressing the persistent farmer-herder conflicts, Umar disclosed that the government has constituted an enforcement committee to implement the White Paper on Grazing Reserves and Cattle Routes. He said the committee would ensure compliance with established regulations to reduce clashes and promote peaceful coexistence.
Meanwhile, the Gombe State Commissioner of Police, Umar Ahmad Chuso, assured residents that security agencies have intensified operations in Akko Local Government Area following recent abductions and killings in Pindiga. He confirmed that ongoing efforts are focused on rescuing victims and bringing the perpetrators to justice.
The state government reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding lives and property, warning that it would not hesitate to take further stringent actions against activities threatening public safety and stability.
