The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has dismissed as fake a viral message circulating across social media alleging the mass arrival of Boko Haram fighters in parts of Southern and North-Central Nigeria, including Lagos, Ilorin, and Rivers State. The message also warned of supposed key holders embedded with tracking devices being distributed in public places.
In a statement issued on Saturday, the Command described the content as “fake, misleading, and fabricated to cause fear, panic, and unnecessary tension.”
Given Akwa Ibom’s proximity to some of the states mentioned in the viral alert, the Command said it found it necessary to directly reassure residents and set the record straight. According to the statement, no security agency has issued any intelligence or warning to support the claims contained in the message.
Residents were urged to remain calm and continue their normal activities without fear. The police emphasized the importance of verifying information before sharing, noting that the spread of false alerts can create avoidable distress within the state.
The Command also reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining safety across all Local Government Areas, stating that security structures, including patrols, surveillance units, tactical teams, and community policing networks, remain fully operational and vigilant.
Citizens were encouraged to stay alert and promptly report suspicious persons or activities to the nearest police station or any security agency.
