The Salvation Army Church has formally resolved to hand over the Salvation Army Secondary School (SASSCO), Akai Ubuim, to the Akwa Ibom State Government following a passionate appeal by the school’s Old Students Association.
The decision was announced during the association’s reunion night held on Saturday, November 15, in Uyo. Addressing the gathering, the President of the Alumni Association, Chief Joseph Udoeshiet, expressed deep concern over the deteriorating state of the once-prestigious institution. He described the school as a former beacon of excellence and a training ground for distinguished men and women, lamenting that its current condition falls far short of its legacy.
Chief Udoeshiet urged members to support ongoing efforts to revive the school and emphasized the need for its management to be taken over by the state government to ensure proper oversight and restoration.
Responding to the concerns, the Territorial Commander of the Salvation Army, Lieutenant Colonel Sunday Ayanam, acknowledged the alumni’s dedication to the school’s future. He announced that the church had carefully reviewed the matter and resolved to officially transfer the institution to the Akwa Ibom State Government for improved administration and development.
Representing Governor Umo Eno at the event, Chief Press Secretary Ekerete Udoh, himself an alumnus, praised the initiative and assured the old students that he would convey the development to the governor. Udoh also commended the organizers for bringing former classmates together after many years.
The reunion was highlighted by the presentation of awards to notable alumni, including Governor Umo Eno of Akwa Ibom State; Governor Bassey Otu of Cross River State; and several other distinguished former students, underscoring the institution’s rich heritage and influence.
