A profound show of gratitude and political solidarity greeted Governor Umo Eno on Saturday as leaders and residents of Essien Udim Local Government Area pledged overwhelming support for his re-election bid in 2027. The assurances came during a grand, fully sponsored 106th birthday celebration in honour of Elder Statesman, Obong M. A. Afangideh, OON, held at his country home in Ikot Umo Essien, Odoro Ikot.
Delivering his remarks, the Member representing Essien Udim State Constituency, Prince Ukpong Akpabio II, praised the governor for singlehandedly bankrolling the elaborate ceremony, describing the gesture as an unforgettable display of love toward the people of the area.
“The Governor funded this entire celebration by himself—food, drinks, logistics, security, media coverage—everything,” Akpabio said. “For personally honouring the oldest politician in Africa and attending despite his busy schedule, Essien Udim will reciprocate this love at the polls. Come 2027, Your Excellency, you won’t need to campaign here. Our votes will speak loudly.”
Also speaking, the Paramount Ruler of Abak Local Government Area and Chairman of the Akwa Ibom State Supreme Council of Traditional Rulers, His Royal Majesty Akuku Saviour Sylvester Udofia, said the governor’s inclusive governance style had endeared him not only to Essien Udim but to the entire Annang nation. He assured that Governor Eno would receive massive support across all Annang communities.
Goodwill messages were delivered by the Speaker of the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Elder Udeme Otong, while Senator Emmanuel Ibok-Essien offered the official birthday toast.
In his response, Governor Umo Eno expressed deep gratitude to Chief Afangideh, describing him as a man of integrity whose early support played a significant role in his political journey. He recalled visiting the centenarian during his campaign and receiving prayers and blessings that he still cherishes.
“Chief Afangideh was the first to show me love,” the governor said. “When I aspired to be governor, he prayed for me and stood by me. I am here today to honour him because his loyalty has been unwavering.”
Governor Eno thanked the people of Essien Udim for their continued support and urged them to extend the same goodwill to President Bola Tinubu and the Senate President ahead of the next general elections.
The celebration highlighted not only the rare milestone of Chief Afangideh’s 106 years but also the deepening political bond between the governor and the Essien Udim community.
