In the passing of a spiritual giant like Rev. Dr. Uma Ukpai, the natural question arises: Who will carry the mantle? Many names may be mentioned, but among them, one stands tall, not because of ambition, but because of years of faithful, quiet service. Pastor Dr. Joe Linus is not just a name beside the late Rev. Uma Ukpai; he has been a shadow in the light, a true servant who walked with his master for over 35 years.
In Scripture, we find a compelling parallel in Elisha, who served Elijah faithfully before inheriting his prophetic mantle. “Then Elisha passed by him and threw his mantle on him.” (1 Kings 19:19). But Elisha didn’t step into that role immediately. Like Pastor Joe Linus, he walked with Elijah, served him (2 Kings 3:11), and waited patiently—not for a position, but for a calling confirmed by God.
Elisha’s service was not transactional but relational—rooted in honor, loyalty, and love for both the man and the mission. In the same way, Pastor Joe Linus’s decades of unwavering commitment reflect what Jesus taught: “Whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant” (Matthew 20:26). In God’s kingdom, greatness is measured not by titles held, but by towels used in service.
This is not about succession through proximity, but succession through proven character. Scripture reminds us, “Moreover it is required in stewards that one be found faithful” (1 Corinthians 4:2). Pastor Linus’s life embodies this faithfulness—an unshakeable devotion to the vision, the vineyard, and the vessel through which God poured into many lives.
If there is anyone positioned, spiritually, relationally, and experientially, to take up the mantle, it is Pastor Joe Linus. Not because he demanded it, but because like Elisha, he has followed closely, served sacrificially, and honored deeply.
May the Church not overlook the divine principle at play: the one who has been faithful in what is another man’s, is qualified to be entrusted with his own (Luke 16:12).
