Uyo, In a sweeping enforcement action aimed at ensuring quality and safety in education, the Akwa Ibom State Ministry of Education has closed 27 unapproved private schools operating without accreditation across four Local Government Areas.
The closures, carried out on September 29th, 30th, and October 2nd, 2025, are part of an ongoing crackdown on illegal schools, many of which were found operating in unsafe and unconventional environments, including incomplete buildings, open fields, residential homes, and even abandoned filling stations.
The Ministry issued a stern warning to the Association of Private School Owners Union (APSOU) and the public, stressing that unauthorized operation of educational institutions violates established standards and poses risks to learners.
“It is a clear violation of government regulations for unapproved facilities—such as septic tank areas, church auditoriums, and farmlands—to be converted into classrooms,” the statement read. “We are committed to ensuring all learning environments meet required safety and quality standards.”

The Ministry emphasized that only schools meeting approved standards and possessing valid accreditation certificates will be allowed to operate. School owners are urged to seek proper authorization before reopening or establishing new institutions.
This action is part of the government’s broader ARISE Agenda, focusing on educational reform and the well-being of students across the state.
