The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has expressed appreciation to the Department of State Services (DSS) for the prompt release of two journalists who were recently detained in Jos, Plateau State.
Ruth Marcus and Keshia Jang, reporters with Jay 101.9 FM, were arrested by DSS operatives while covering the funeral of the late mother of Professor Nentawe Yilwatda, the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
The circumstances surrounding their arrest sparked concern among press freedom advocates, prompting swift calls for their release. The NUJ described the DSS’s decision to release the journalists without delay as a welcome development and urged continued respect for the rights and safety of media professionals carrying out their constitutional duties.
“We commend the DSS for responding swiftly to concerns raised and ensuring the journalists regained their freedom in a timely manner,” the NUJ said in a statement.
The union also reiterated the importance of protecting press freedom, especially during politically sensitive events, and called for closer collaboration between security agencies and the media.
