Akwa Ibom State signaled its ambition to challenge the status quo as the 2024 Gateway Games commenced in grand style at the MKO Abiola Sports Arena on Sunday. The state’s contingent drew widespread admiration with its colorful parade entry and confident outlook, led by officials determined to rewrite the narrative of sports dominance in Nigeria.
Among the delegation’s leading voices was James O. James, Assistant Director (Administration) in the Akwa Ibom State Ministry of Sports. Speaking to journalists shortly after the opening ceremony, he offered insight into the state’s renewed drive and strategic preparation for the national games.
According to James, Akwa Ibom’s resurgence in sports is underpinned by visionary leadership and professional administration. He attributed the state’s readiness to the unwavering support of Governor Umo Eno, whom he described as a “sports-loving leader” with a hands-on approach.
“We have a governor who loves sports. He is fondly called ‘the golden man’ because of his passion,” James stated. “He appointed Elder Paul ‘Sports’ Bassey, an accomplished sports journalist and former Akwa United FC Chairman, as Commissioner for Sports. That’s a round peg in a round hole. So, we are out this time to make a difference.”
Acknowledging the historic dominance of Delta and Edo States in national sports competitions, James was both pragmatic and hopeful about Akwa Ibom’s prospects.
“Definitely, we are going to do our best. We may not surpass them overnight, but we’re focused on closing the gap. Before long, we might even overtake them,” he said, with evident conviction.
The early arrival of Akwa Ibom athletes at the Games was no coincidence. James revealed that timely release of funds by the state government enabled the team to settle in early and prepare adequately.
“We were one of the first states to arrive. The governor ensured early release of funds. Every gold medalist will be duly appreciated, and that kind of motivation is something we’ve not had in a while,” he added.
Fielding athletes in 23 different sports, Akwa Ibom is setting its sights high. James expressed confidence that the state could finish among the top three on the medals table.
“We expect every sport to deliver at least one gold medal. Sports like weightlifting, kickboxing, and athletics could earn us up to seven medals each. If that happens, we’re confident of a strong overall showing,” he stated.
He also commended Ogun State for its organization and facilities.
“The atmosphere is exciting. Everything I’ve seen in Ogun so far is impressive. It’s shaping up to be a great experience,” James concluded.
As the Gateway Games unfold, Akwa Ibom’s delegation has made its intentions clear: they are not in Abeokuta to merely participate but to compete fiercely, challenge the giants, and carve out a new chapter in Nigerian sports history.
