A chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and member of its Reconciliation Committee, Eddy Olafeso, has advised the party to seek a strategic alliance with Mr. Peter Obi of the Labour Party and other opposition leaders ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Speaking during an appearance on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Wednesday, Olafeso emphasized that building a coalition is the only realistic path to unseating the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
Peter Obi, who was PDP’s vice presidential candidate in 2019, defected to the Labour Party ahead of the 2023 presidential election. Running under the Labour Party, Obi polled 6,101,533 votes according to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), finishing third, despite winning in several key states.
“Not only Peter Obi, every person that is somebody in this country that can actually garner one or two votes must be spoken with,” Olafeso stated, stressing the need for inclusivity in any plan to reclaim power in 2027.
He further expressed concerns over the credibility of INEC, alleging that the electoral body appears compromised and heavily influenced by the APC. “It would be difficult for any single political party to defeat the APC without a strong alliance because it’s obvious INEC has been hijacked,” Olafeso claimed.
The PDP stalwart maintained that forming a merger or coalition is not uncommon in democratic societies and is crucial to mounting a formidable challenge in future elections.
