As Uyo, the capital of Akwa Ibom State, hosts the much-anticipated Niger Delta Sports Festival, concerns are growing over the state of sanitation and road infrastructure in some local government areas. Despite the city’s reputation as one of Nigeria’s cleanest state capitals, pockets of dirty environments and deteriorating roads with portholes are painting a contrasting picture.
Visitors and athletes arriving for the festival are met with sights that do not reflect the state’s usual standard of excellence. While the government has made significant efforts in preparing sports facilities, some communities still struggle with waste management and road maintenance, raising questions about sustainability and urban planning.
With the influx of guests for the festival, will authorities take swift action to address these environmental challenges, or will the spectacle of sports overshadow the pressing need for cleaner and better-maintained surroundings?
