Success, whether in our spiritual walk or any field of endeavor, demands commitment, discipline, and a burning passion. Just as in football, where a player’s dedication determines his performance and contribution to the team’s victory, so it is in our Christian journey, lukewarmness is the greatest enemy of success.
Jesus Himself warns against a half-hearted approach in Revelation 3:15-16:
“I know your works, that you are neither cold nor hot. I wish you were cold or hot! So then, because you are lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will vomit you out of My mouth.”
This passage clearly shows that lukewarmness is unacceptable in God’s kingdom, just as it is in a football team that aspires to victory.
1. A Lukewarm Footballer and the Lukewarm Christian
In a football team, every player has a role. There are defenders, midfielders, and strikers, all working toward a common goal. However, imagine a player who shows up late for training, lacks enthusiasm during matches, and refuses to put in effort. This player becomes a liability to the team and, eventually, the coach might bench or even remove him.
Likewise, in our Christian walk, God expects us to be fully engaged. A lukewarm Christian lacks spiritual fervor, neglects prayer, avoids studying the Word, and fails to spread the gospel. Just as a football coach cannot rely on an uncommitted player, God cannot use a lukewarm believer for His divine purpose.
Biblical Reference: Colossians 3:23, “And whatever you do, do it heartily, as to the Lord and not to men.”
A footballer must give his best on the field, just as we must serve God with all our heart.
2. The Danger of Lukewarmness in a Team and the Church
A football team thrives on unity and passion. A lukewarm player disrupts the team’s energy, causing losses and frustrations. His lack of commitment discourages others and weakens the team’s morale.
Similarly, in the church, lukewarm members hinder growth. When believers become complacent, they stop evangelizing, neglect fellowship, and refuse to serve in ministry. This leads to spiritual stagnation.
Biblical Reference: James 1:8 “A double-minded man is unstable in all his ways.”
A footballer who is neither fully committed nor fully detached is unpredictable and unreliable, just like a Christian who wavers between God and the world.
3. The Cost of Lukewarmness: Losing Your Place
In football, players who fail to improve and stay committed often lose their place to more passionate and hardworking teammates. No coach will keep a player who constantly underperforms due to a lack of effort.
Jesus illustrated this principle in the Parable of the Talents Matthew 25:14-30. The servant who buried his talent instead of using it was rebuked and cast out. Likewise, lukewarm Christians risk losing their spiritual gifts, opportunities, and, ultimately, their place in God’s kingdom.
Biblical Reference: Matthew 25:29, “For to everyone who has, more will be given, and he will have abundance; but from him who does not have, even what he has will be taken away.”
4. How to Overcome Lukewarmness and Achieve Success
A footballer who wants to succeed must train diligently, A Christian must engage in regular prayer and Bible study. 2 Timothy 2:15.
Follow the coach’s instructions, We must obey God’s Word and submit to His will. John 14:15.
Play with passion and teamwork, We must serve God with zeal and work in unity with fellow believers, Romans 12:11.
Strive for victory, We should press toward our spiritual goals with determination, Philippians 3:14
Finally, Lukewarmness is dangerous, both in football and in our walk with God. Just as a committed footballer trains hard, plays passionately, and works with his team to achieve victory, we must also serve God wholeheartedly. If we remain lukewarm, we risk being cast aside, both in life and in eternity.
May we choose to be on fire for God, just as a footballer striving for success gives his all on the field.
