The recently concluded Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria (PFN) Biennial Conference was an emotional experience for many attendees, as it highlighted the aging state of some of Nigeria’s most revered spiritual leaders.
One of the most striking moments of the event was seeing the once-vibrant evangelist, Papa Uma Ukpai, being assisted to the pulpit with a walking aid. The sight moved many to tears, serving as a stark reminder of the passage of time. Similarly, the image of Pastor Enoch Adeboye, the General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), delivering his sermon while seated, further emphasized the reality that these great men are advancing in age.
Reflecting on this, Pastor Adeboye poignantly described their stage in life as being in the “departure lounge”, a metaphor for their readiness to meet their Maker after decades of tireless service in the Lord’s vineyard.
Beyond the emotions, the conference carried a powerful lesson for the younger generation of ministers and believers: the importance of consistency. This is not only in terms of achievements and exploits but, more crucially, in personal devotion to God. The enduring commitment of these fathers of faith, spanning decades of ministry, serves as a challenge to the next generation to remain steadfast in their calling.
As these spiritual generals prepare to pass the baton, the question remains: Will the younger generation uphold the legacy of unwavering faith and devotion that they have exemplified?
