Uyo, The Commissioner of Police, Akwa Ibom State, CP Baba Mohammed Azare, fsi, has called for stronger collaboration between the police, youths, and business leaders to foster peace and security in the state.
In a crucial meeting held on Monday, CP Azare engaged youth leaders from the 31 Local Government Areas (LGAs) and Chief Executive Officers (CEOs) of industries, emphasizing the need for mutual cooperation to curb crime and promote development.
Addressing the youth representatives, CP Azare urged them to embrace peace and work closely with law enforcement to enhance security. He warned against jungle justice and illegal road blockades, stressing that such actions violate the law and would not be tolerated. Instead, he encouraged the youths to report grievances through legal channels for due process.
Deputy Commissioner of Police, State Criminal Investigation Department, DCP Salawudeen Ishiaka, also cautioned against cultism and other unlawful activities, advising youths to contribute positively to their communities.
Reacting to the meeting, the Chairman of the National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN), Udung Uko Chapter, Mr. Oscar Ita, commended the Commissioner’s proactive approach, pledging to spread the message among youths. Similarly, NYCN Mkpat Enin LGA Chairman, Comrade Emem Alexander Udo, described the engagement as unprecedented, reinforcing the belief that “the police is your friend.”
In a related session with industry CEOs, CP Azare addressed the growing tensions between companies and local youths, urging business owners to create employment and educational opportunities to foster peaceful coexistence. He stressed the importance of including youths in community-related meetings and business affairs to prevent conflicts.
Speaking on behalf of the business community, Mr. Johnson Ogbum, General Manager of Seplat Energy Producing Nigeria Unlimited, appreciated the initiative, acknowledging past communication gaps between companies and youths. He assured that businesses would strengthen their engagement with the youth and resolve conflicts amicably while collaborating with the police for a peaceful business environment.
The Akwa Ibom State Police Command reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining law and order in line with the Inspector General of Police’s security vision.
Residents were urged to report security concerns to the nearest police station.
