The Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ), Akwa Ibom State Chapter, has called for stronger collaboration with the state’s Police Command to enhance security and promote gender equality.
Led by its Chairman, Comrade Nsikak Okon, NAWOJ paid a courtesy visit to the Commissioner of Police, Baba Mohammed Azare, fsi, at the Police Headquarters, Ikot Akpanabia, on Wednesday, January 29, 2025.
During the visit, Comrade Okon highlighted NAWOJ’s commitment to empowering women, advocating for social justice, and reporting on gender issues. She emphasized the need for police support in addressing gender-based violence and other societal concerns.
“NAWOJ, as a non-governmental organization, has engaged in various activities, including empowering women, supporting wives of security personnel, and assisting the less privileged. Our role in shedding light on gender-based violence remains a priority, and we will continue to push for justice,” she stated.
She also revealed NAWOJ’s plans for the upcoming International Women’s Day on March 30, urging the Police Command to partner with the association in its initiatives.
“We will be happy to have the State Police Command collaborate with us on our programs. Likewise, we are open to assisting the police whenever necessary,” she added.
Comrade Okon congratulated CP Azare on his appointment and commended his efforts in strengthening the state’s security framework and fostering a gender-inclusive approach to policing.
In response, Commissioner Azare reaffirmed his commitment to addressing gender-related issues and ensuring a secure environment. He assured NAWOJ of his support and disclosed plans to establish a female police squad, which will undergo specialized training to enhance crime-fighting efforts.
The immediate past National Secretary of NAWOJ, Comrade Helen Udofa, expressed gratitude to the Commissioner, lauding his achievements in crime reduction. She urged him to address the farmers-herders conflict and issues related to scavengers in the state to mitigate their adverse effects.
The visit underscored NAWOJ’s dedication to promoting gender equality, social justice, and collaboration with security agencies for a safer and more equitable Akwa Ibom State.
