In strict compliance with the directive of the Inspector General of Police, IGP Kayode Egbetokun, PhD, NPM, the Commissioner of Police in Delta State, CP Olufemi Abaniwonda, has mandated all Divisional Police Officers (DPOs) and personnel under the command to adhere to a new policy regarding bailable offences.
Henceforth, suspects arrested for simple offences or misdemeanors are to be granted bail unconditionally and must not be detained overnight in police cells.
This directive is aimed at upholding the rights of suspects and ensuring that the police operate within the confines of the law. The Commissioner emphasized that any violation of this order would attract disciplinary action.
Members of the public are encouraged to screenshot the directive and save it on their mobile phones. However, it is also advised that anyone seeking bail for a minor offence must provide a reliable surety.
