Oron, Akwa Ibom State, January 13, 2025: The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has confirmed a brazen attack on its Marine Police Patrol Team by suspected sea pirates along the Oron-Calabar waterways. The incident, which occurred on January 11, 2025, around 1:00 PM, left two officers injured and another unaccounted for.
According to a press release issued by the Command, the armed assailants, numbering about 24 and dressed in military camouflage, launched a surprise attack on the patrol team during a routine operation. The attackers, operating in three speedboats, engaged the police officers in a fierce gun battle in an attempt to overpower them. Despite the officers’ valiant efforts, casualties were recorded.
Inspector Sunday Usuyak and Inspector Edet Enenyi sustained gunshot wounds during the encounter and are currently receiving advanced medical care. However, Inspector Udi Emenyi remains missing, prompting the launch of an intensive search and rescue operation.
The Akwa Ibom State Police Command, in collaboration with the Nigerian Navy and other security agencies, has deployed specialized teams to locate the missing officer and bring the perpetrators to justice. Speaking on the attack, Commissioner of Police, CP Baba Mohammed Azare, who visited the scene, assured the public of heightened security measures and intensified patrols across the state’s waterways.
In a statement, the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP ‘Timfon John, reiterated the Command’s commitment to ensuring that the state’s waterways are not safe havens for criminals. He also urged the public to provide credible information that could assist in ongoing operations.
The Police Command has vowed to apprehend those responsible for this heinous act and has assured residents of its unwavering dedication to protecting lives and property across Akwa Ibom State.
