As former Akwa Ibom State Governor, Udom Gabriel Emmanuel, marked his 60th birthday, tributes poured in from associates, admirers and well-wishers, with one of his longtime friends and university colleague, Dr. Fayemiwo, describing him as “a man of honour” whose integrity, humility and commitment to public service have remained unchanged despite occupying high public office.
In a goodwill message released to commemorate the milestone, Dr. Fayemiwo, who said he had known Emmanuel for more than four decades, recounted their days at the University of Lagos and his close relationship with the former governor throughout his eight-year administration. He described Emmanuel as a leader whose words could be trusted, noting that he consistently fulfilled his promises and remained morally upright from his banking career through his tenure as governor between 2015 and 2023.
According to him, Emmanuel’s humility and accessibility distinguished him from many public office holders. He recalled an occasion when the former governor insisted that a visiting friend should be accommodated in his private residence if hotel accommodation was unavailable, saying the gesture reflected his generosity and personal warmth. He also commended Emmanuel’s Christian faith, describing it as the foundation of his leadership style and public service.
The tribute further praised Emmanuel for what it described as his transformational leadership in Akwa Ibom State and for handing over to Governor Umo Eno after completing his constitutionally allowed two terms in office. Fayemiwo also described the former governor as a detribalised Nigerian who places national unity above political and ethnic considerations.
He concluded by offering prayers for Emmanuel’s continued good health, long life and divine guidance as he entered his sixth decade, expressing confidence that the former governor would continue to make meaningful contributions to the development of Akwa Ibom State and Nigeria.
