The Peace Corps of Nigeria, Akwa Ibom State Command, has commenced a statewide sensitisation campaign aimed at tackling bullying, cultism, drug abuse and other social vices in secondary schools across the state. The initiative, which seeks to promote discipline, peaceful coexistence and moral values among students, was flagged off on Monday at Offot Ukwa Secondary School, Obio Offot, Uyo.
Leading the outreach, the State Commandant of the Peace Corps, F/Lt. Aniefiok Effiong, said the campaign was designed to instill discipline, encourage peaceful conflict resolution and create a safer learning environment for students. Quoting former United States President Ronald Reagan, Effiong stressed that, “Peace is not the absence of conflict, but the ability to handle conflict by peaceful means,” urging students to reject violence, cultism, bullying and drug abuse in all forms.
The sensitisation programme attracted a large number of students, teachers and school administrators. The Principal of Offot Ukwa Secondary School, Mrs. Julie Anitie Effiong, commended the Peace Corps for bringing the timely initiative to the school, describing it as a valuable contribution to character development among young people.
A major highlight of the programme was an interactive session on sexual abuse, during which students were educated on how to identify, resist and report cases of molestation and exploitation.
The School Prefect, Goodnews Emmanuel Udo, delivered the vote of thanks on behalf of the students, while the Peace Corps expressed optimism that the campaign would be extended to more schools across Akwa Ibom State in the coming weeks.
