Residents of Iko Udo Obobo Village in Ukanafun Local Government Area have been thrown into deep mourning and disbelief following the brutal killing of a 27-year-old man, identified simply as Okon.
The tragic incident, which has sent shockwaves across the community, saw the victim reportedly burnt beyond recognition inside his room under circumstances police have described as deliberate and violent.
According to a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer of the Akwa Ibom State Police Command, DSP Timfon John, operatives acted swiftly on credible intelligence, storming the scene and securing the area amid widespread panic.
Preliminary findings, the police said, pointed to a calculated act of culpable homicide, intensifying fears among residents already grappling with the gruesome nature of the crime.
Following days of investigation, authorities confirmed the arrest of two suspects, Idem Etim and Namkere Ikoboatang, who are currently in custody and assisting with ongoing inquiries.
The Commissioner of Police, Baba Mohammed Azare, has directed a comprehensive investigation into the incident, assuring that all individuals linked to the killing will be tracked and prosecuted.
“This Command remains resolute in ensuring that justice is served and that perpetrators of violent crimes have no hiding place,” the statement emphasized.
For the people of Ukanafun, however, the incident transcends official statements. It is a devastating loss that has left a family grieving, a community shaken, and many questioning the circumstances surrounding the young man’s death.
