In today’s world of fast-paced ministry and passionate soul-winning, it’s easy to assume that motion equals progress. But as I wrapped up my Street2Street, Bustop2Bustop evangelism in Port Harcourt today, a deeper truth confronted me again: Labour without light is effort without eternal effect.
Many believers today are fervent — preaching, praying, organizing outreaches yet they often neglect the very fuel that makes their fire effective: the light of God’s Word and the leading of the Holy Spirit. The Bible says in Psalm 119:130, “The unfolding of Your words gives light; it gives understanding to the simple.” Without this understanding, even the most passionate efforts can feel like fire without flame, burning out but never lighting up lives.
We must remember that God’s work is not powered by human zeal alone. “Not by might, nor by power, but by My Spirit,” declares the Lord in Zechariah 4:6. If we step into ministry without truth, we risk misleading others and draining ourselves.
This isn’t just a theory, it’s biblical history. In Acts 19, some Jews tried to cast out demons using the name of Jesus without truly knowing Him or walking in His light. Their efforts ended in humiliation. Compare that to Philip in Acts 8, who preached Christ with clarity and power, backed by the Spirit and many believed.
This contrast is clear: Activity is not the same as authority. Movement is not the same as mission.
God is not impressed by how much we do, but by how rightly we do it. He calls us not just to labour, but to labour in His light and by His Spirit.
Reflection:
Am I just working hard, or am I being led by truth and the Spirit?
Before we rush into ministry, we must pause to seek His Word and His will. Let light come before labour. Let truth shape our strategy. And let the Holy Spirit lead the way.
Final Words: Zeal is good but zeal without knowledge leads to burnout, not breakthrough. Let us pursue not just activity for God, but alignment with God.
