In a significant move aimed at enhancing rural infrastructure and economic development, Senator Ekong Sampson, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Solid Minerals and Senator representing Akwa Ibom South (Eket) Senatorial District, on Friday, October 10, 2025, officially flagged off the construction of the Ikot Unya–Nung Ukim–Ikot Ekpe Road in Mkpat Enin Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State.
The 3-kilometre road project, awarded by the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) as an Emergency Intervention initiative, is expected to improve connectivity, ease transportation, and stimulate economic activity in the benefiting communities.
Addressing a jubilant crowd of community leaders, stakeholders, women and youth groups, and members of both the APC and PDP, Senator Sampson expressed profound gratitude to the NDDC, led by Managing Director Dr. Samuel Ogbuku and Executive Director, Projects, Rt. Hon. Dr. Victor Antai, for facilitating the project.
According to the lawmaker, the road will significantly boost agricultural productivity by enabling farmers to transport their produce, such as cassava, plantains, and vegetables—more efficiently to markets, thus enhancing food security and rural incomes. He added that improved access will also support the local oil and gas sector, drive trade, and create employment opportunities.
“This marks the first time the Ikot Unya community will witness a tarred road since the creation of this local government area,” Senator Sampson said. “It is a milestone that speaks to our commitment to infrastructure and grassroots development.”
Senator Sampson also used the occasion to commend Governor Umo Eno for his inclusive governance under the “Arise Agenda,” hinting at further projects coming to Mkpat Enin, including the upcoming Ibekwe–Ekpuk Road. He further appreciated the support of Senate President Godswill Akpabio for backing infrastructure efforts in the senatorial district.
In a political rallying call, he urged constituents across Akwa Ibom South to actively participate in the ongoing voter registration and revalidation exercise, describing it as crucial to sustaining good governance under President Bola Tinubu and Governor Umo Eno.
“In today’s Nigeria, it would be unwise to contemplate unseating a performing President or Governor,” he said. “We must align ourselves with leaderships that are delivering real dividends of democracy.”
Commending the senator’s leadership, Hon. Engr. Otobong Ndem, former member of the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly, praised Sampson’s effective representation and developmental strides across the senatorial district in sectors like education, healthcare, and infrastructure.
“This road project is a testament to his commitment to our people. It will increase land value, enhance connectivity, and bring prosperity to Mkpat Enin,” Engr. Ndem stated.
The Managing Director of Tek Construction Company Limited, Engr. Ernest Mika Olisa, assured that the project will be delivered within one year and called for community cooperation to ensure smooth execution.
Also speaking at the event, traditional and political leaders including HRM Edidem Akpan Ikpe (Paramount Ruler of Mkpat Enin), Hon. Utitofon Jeremiah (APC Chapter Chairman), Prof. Etete Peters, Rev. Obot Ekanem, and Engr. Emmanuel Jacob, commended Senator Sampson for his selfless service and unwavering commitment to grassroots development.
Dignitaries present included Sir Michael Essang, Director General of the Senator’s Campaign Organisation; Barr. Ini Ekott, Chairman of the Empowerment Committee; Hon. Efefiong Antigha; Hon. Abigail Edohoket; and Hon. Isaiah, PDP Chapter Chairman, among others.
Meanwhile, in recognition of his developmental impact in the area, the Okon Clan Council in Eket bestowed on Senator Ekong Sampson the prestigious chieftaincy title of Otuekong Okon. This follows his facilitation of various projects in the clan, including a rural electrification scheme and the construction of a CBT centre at Comprehensive Secondary School, Ikot Ataku.
