The bodies of some passengers aboard the crashed Nigerian Air Force (NAF) ATR 42 aircraft have been recovered from a swamp in Igbokoda, Ondo State, Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa has confirmed.

The governor disclosed this during an interview with TVC, explaining that naval personnel and divers had been searching the water for victims following the aircraft crash. He said he had advised the rescue teams to pay attention to areas where bubbles were emerging from beneath the water, suggesting that bodies or other materials could be submerged there.

“I just got a report from one of the divers that some bodies were also found, but not alive,” Aiyedatiwa said, confirming the recovery of the victims.

Beyond the recovery operation, the governor expressed concern over the possible environmental consequences of the crash, warning that debris from the aircraft could be contaminating the surrounding water. He said aircraft parts retrieved from the river appeared to have released fuel or other substances into the water.

Aiyedatiwa also cited the unpleasant odour around the crash site as a possible indication of pollution, stressing the need for the wreckage to be evacuated promptly to protect residents and the surrounding environment. The recovery operation and efforts to remove the debris remain critical to addressing both the human and environmental consequences of the incident.
