The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Akwa Ibom State Council, has taken delivery of solar-powered street lights for installation at the NUJ Press Centre in Uyo, following the fulfilment of a commitment by the Member representing Ukanafun/Oruk Anam Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Unyime Idem, PhD.

The lighting facilities were presented to the Union by Idem’s Special Assistant on General Duties, Mr. Ediong Charles, who said the gesture was in fulfilment of a promise made by the federal lawmaker to the NUJ about two months ago.

Charles said the intervention underscored the Idem’s commitment to supporting initiatives aimed at improving the working environment, security and welfare of journalists in Akwa Ibom State.

Receiving the items on behalf of the Union, the NUJ Chairman, Akwa Ibom State Council, Comrade Nsibiet John, thanked Idem for keeping his word, describing the gesture as a practical response to an important need at the Press Centre.

John noted that the intervention had also enabled him to fulfil a commitment he made to members of the Union during the 2025 election campaign to provide adequate lighting for the Press Centre if elected chairman.

According to him, the installation of the solar-powered street lights will improve visibility and security within and around the Press Centre, particularly during the night.

He added that the improved lighting would make the facility more accessible and conducive for journalists, media workers and visitors who may need to use the Press Centre beyond normal working hours.

The NUJ chairman further said the project would enhance the safety of users of the facility while creating a better environment for professional, media and union activities.

Idem, according to his representative, has also supported solar-powered lighting interventions in other parts of Akwa Ibom State as part of efforts to improve visibility and security in locations where public lighting is needed.

The latest intervention at the NUJ Press Centre, he said, formed part of the lawmaker’s broader commitment to supporting projects and initiatives that improve public facilities and community life beyond the boundaries of Ukanafun/Oruk Anam Federal Constituency.

John described the gesture as evidence that the needs of the media community were receiving attention, and assured the lawmaker of the Union’s continued cooperation with individuals and institutions committed to the growth of journalism and the welfare of media practitioners.

Those present at the presentation included the Secretary of the NUJ State Council, Comrade Nsikak Esenowo; Financial Secretary, Comrade Kufre Emmanuel; Auditor, Comrade Dianime Uko; Chairman of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN), Akwa Ibom State Chapter, Comrade Emmanuel Akpan; Chairman of the Press Centre Management Committee, Comrade Edifon Solomon; and Comrade Simeon Akwa.
