The decision of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Akwa Ibom State Council, under the leadership of Comrade Nsibiet John, to rename its rebranded conference hall after former Chairman, Comrade Israel Umoh, is a commendable demonstration of visionary leadership and institutional gratitude.
By immortalising a leader who made remarkable contributions to the Union’s infrastructural development, the Council has shown that service, sacrifice and excellence will never be forgotten.
Such recognition is not only a reward for past achievements but also a powerful message to present and future leaders that genuine commitment to the growth of the profession leaves a lasting legacy.
Comrade Israel Umoh’s tenure between 2004 and 2007 remains one of the defining periods in the history of the Akwa Ibom NUJ. His successful completion and furnishing of the NUJ Secretariat, as well as his foresight in initiating the 2,000-seat auditorium project, laid a solid foundation for the Council’s continued development.
The decision by Comrade Nsibiet John to honour him while he is alive reflects wisdom, maturity and a leadership style that values history, celebrates excellence and inspires others to serve selflessly.
Too often, deserving individuals are celebrated only after their passing. This timely recognition corrects that culture and deserves widespread applause.
The Evangelist therefore commends Comrade Nsibiet John and his executive for demonstrating that leadership is not only about initiating new projects but also about preserving institutional memory and appreciating those who built the organisation.
We also salute Comrade Israel Umoh for his enduring contributions and his continued commitment to the Union. As the Akwa Ibom NUJ moves forward, this noble gesture should strengthen unity among members, encourage greater professionalism and motivate every journalist to contribute meaningfully to the advancement of the profession.
A Union that honours its heroes is one that is well-positioned to build an even greater future.
