The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Akwa Ibom State Council, has defended its recent endorsement of Senator Ekong Sampson for a second term, describing criticisms trailing the decision as unfounded and driven by sentiment rather than facts.
The endorsement, led by the State Chairman, Comrade Nsibiet John, had sparked reactions from some quarters, with critics questioning whether the Senator was representing the interests of the NUJ at the National Assembly or those of his constituents in Eket Senatorial District.
Responding to the concerns, supporters of the decision argued that Senator Sampson’s relationship with the NUJ is neither new nor inappropriate, noting that he is a journalist by background and an active member of one of the prominent chapels under the Akwa Ibom State Council of the union.
They maintained that professional bodies, including the Nigerian Bar Association and other interest groups, have a long-standing tradition of endorsing their members or colleagues for elective positions when deemed qualified.
“As a learned colleague, you should understand that professional associations often identify and support their own who have demonstrated capacity,” a pro-endorsement voice stated, adding that the NUJ’s action should be viewed within that context rather than politicised.
The group further urged stakeholders to avoid trivialising serious matters, emphasizing that endorsements remain a legitimate democratic expression of support and do not in any way override the broader mandate of the electorate.
The NUJ leadership has yet to issue a fresh formal statement addressing the controversy, but insiders insist the endorsement was based on Senator Sampson’s track record and longstanding affiliation with the journalism profession.
The development continues to generate debate within media and political circles across the state, particularly as preparations gradually build toward future electoral contests.
