The Delta State Government has approved the construction of 25 modern Divisional Police Headquarters across the state’s 25 local government areas as part of preparations for the anticipated implementation of state policing in Nigeria.
The decision was taken during the State Executive Council (EXCO) meeting presided over by Governor Sheriff Oborevwori.
Briefing journalists after the meeting, the State Commissioner for Works (Rural Roads), Charles Aniagwu, disclosed that the council also approved the establishment of a Special Police Protection Unit (SPU) to further strengthen the state’s security architecture.
Aniagwu explained that the projects, estimated to cost over ₦34 billion, align with the governor’s MORE Agenda and reflect the administration’s determination to safeguard lives and property across the state.
According to him, the approval covers the construction of 25 state-of-the-art divisional police headquarters, with one facility to be located in each local government area.
He noted that the initiative was designed to position Delta ahead of the Federal Government’s proposed policy on state policing, ensuring the state is fully prepared once the framework becomes operational nationwide.
“The Executive Council meeting today, as usual, was led by the governor in line with the MORE Agenda, and several projects that touched the lives of our people across the 25 local government areas and across different sectors were approved,” Aniagwu said.
“However, principal among the decisions reached today hinge on the number one responsibility of government, which is the security of lives and property.”
He added that despite Delta being regarded as one of the safest states in the country, the government was determined to further reinforce its security structure.
“Flowing from that, and ahead of the Federal Government’s policy on state policing, the state government today approved the construction of state-of-the-art divisional police headquarters in the 25 local government areas of the state.
“In addition, the Executive Council also approved the establishment of a Special Police Protection Unit. These two projects together will gulp over ₦34 billion,” he said.
Aniagwu stressed that the projects demonstrate the government’s proactive approach to security and its readiness to adopt new policing strategies that would enhance public safety.
He also disclosed that the Commissioner for Housing has been directed to immediately commence the necessary processes to ensure the projects are executed without delay.
The commissioner further revealed that the council approved several other projects across key sectors, including road infrastructure in riverine communities, aimed at improving connectivity and stimulating socio-economic development across the state.
