The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has issued a stern warning to motorists and other road users against the dangerous practice of driving against the flow of traffic, popularly known as one-way driving, declaring that offenders will henceforth face arrest and prosecution.
In a press release issued on Saturday, the Command expressed serious concern over the rising incidence of traffic violations involving motorists, commercial drivers, tricyclists, motorcyclists, and cyclists who unlawfully operate against traffic on roads across the state.
According to the Police, one-way driving constitutes a gross violation of traffic regulations and remains a major cause of road crashes, injuries, loss of lives, and damage to property, thereby posing a significant threat to public safety.
To address the situation, the Commissioner of Police has directed all Area Commanders, Divisional Police Officers, Traffic Units, and Tactical Teams to intensify enforcement operations across the state and ensure the arrest and prosecution of offenders without exception.
The Command advised members of the public to strictly obey traffic laws, respect road signs, and conduct themselves responsibly while using the roads, stressing that no individual or category of road user is above the law.
It also called on parents, transport unions, fleet operators, and community leaders to caution their members and wards against engaging in the unlawful and life-threatening practice.
The Police Command reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring the safety of all road users and maintaining peace and order on highways and streets across Akwa Ibom State.
