Abak, The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Abak Division, has paid a courtesy visit to the headquarters of the COMPPART Foundation for Justice and Peace Building, reaffirming its commitment to strengthen collaboration with civil society toward enhancing community security and peacebuilding in the area.
The delegation, led by the Divisional Officer, Superintendent of Corps (SC) Agwu Promise, who was recently transferred from Yala Local Government Area in Cross River State, was accompanied by the Intelligence Officer, others, Abak Division. The visit, according to SC Agwu, was to honour Barr. Saviour Akpan, Executive Director of COMPPART Foundation, in recognition of his continuous advocacy for the less privileged and his role in promoting human rights and community peace.
“We find this visit necessary because of the voice he has been lending to the less privileged in society. It is important for us to work closely with stakeholders like COMPPART Foundation to build a safer and more peaceful community,” SC Agwu stated.
In his remarks, Saviour Akpan Esq thanked the NSCDC officers for their visit, describing it as a positive step toward fostering stronger synergy between law enforcement and civil society in Abak Local Government Area.
“I commend your team for taking this bold initiative. Security cannot cease completely, but it can be minimized through collaboration and proactive engagement. My office will remain open for inter-agency meetings and dialogue,” Akpan said.
Akpan, a renowned human rights activist, also appealed to the Federal Government and political leaders to improve the welfare and working conditions of NSCDC personnel, particularly in Abak Division, which he described as lacking basic facilities such as accommodation and vehicles.
“My visit to the divisional headquarters was an eye-opener. The government must look into the welfare of the Corps to enable them perform their civic duties effectively,” he added.
The COMPPART Foundation for Justice and Peace Building is an apolitical and anti-corruption human rights organization committed to promoting justice, security, and peacebuilding. The foundation works to bridge the gap between the civil populace and security agencies through community-oriented policing and collaborative initiatives.
As part of its ongoing programs, COMPPART, a member of several national, regional, and global networks, is implementing projects in partnership with ActionAid Nigeria and with funding from the Global Community Engagement and Resilience Fund (GCERF), Geneva. These initiatives aim to develop advocacy strategies for early warning and response systems, counter violent extremism, and promote digital peacebuilding campaigns across Akwa Ibom State and the South-South geopolitical zone.
The meeting between NSCDC and COMPPART Foundation was held under the Chatham House Rule, emphasizing confidentiality and openness in dialogue, and both parties pledged to continue working together to foster peace, justice, and human security in Abak and beyond.
