ABUJA, The Nigeria Police have detained an official of the Abuja Geographic Information Systems (AGIS), Mairiga Hassan Shaharu, in connection with the leak of confidential documents allegedly linking the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, and his son to controversial land allocations in Abuja.
Shaharu, who works in the Fresh Applications Unit of AGIS, was taken into custody on Tuesday afternoon amid mounting pressure to unearth the source of the leaked documents that have triggered public outrage and political scrutiny.
The leaked materials reportedly contain evidence suggesting that Wike may have used his ministerial influence to secure prime land parcels in the FCT for his son and possibly other family members—allegations that, if proven, could amount to abuse of office and violation of public trust.
Sources within AGIS confirmed that Shaharu’s arrest is part of a broader investigation aimed at determining whether he acted independently or as part of a coordinated whistleblowing effort or wider syndicate within the land administration system.
The development comes at a time of growing demands for transparency in land allocation processes within the capital city and renewed calls for accountability in public service.
Law enforcement agencies have yet to formally charge Shaharu, but a police source hinted that interrogation is ongoing and that other AGIS officials may also be invited for questioning as the investigation expands.
Neither the FCT Minister nor AGIS has issued an official response as of press time.
