The Akwa Ibom State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has conferred an Award of Excellence on Chief Tony Ukpong, celebrating his legacy as one of Nigeria’s unsung heroes of democracy and a stalwart in the field of journalism.
The recognition was the highlight of the 2025 World Press Freedom Day celebration held at the NUJ Press Centre in Uyo. This year’s theme, “Reporting in the Brave New World: The Impact of Artificial Intelligence on Press Freedom and the Media,” set the tone for deep reflection on the evolving media landscape and the sacrifices of media veterans like Chief Ukpong.
Described as long overdue but well-deserved, the award acknowledges Chief Ukpong’s unwavering commitment to democratic ideals and journalistic integrity.
He is revered for his courageous reporting during Nigeria’s military era, particularly under General Ibrahim Babangida’s regime. Chief Ukpong survived assassination attempts and endured an 11-month imprisonment while serving with The Punch and Vanguard newspapers.
Known as Nigeria’s only ‘Chartered Journalist,’ Chief Ukpong is a prolific writer and seasoned media practitioner who continues to shape the profession with wisdom and conviction. With a career spanning over three decades, his contributions to journalism in Akwa Ibom State and Nigeria at large remain profound and inspiring.
During the ceremony, a supporter expressed heartfelt appreciation:
“I am particularly happy and I thank the Comrade Amos Etuk leadership of the NUJ immensely for this recognition. It is a well-deserved Award of Excellence.”
There was also a fervent call to the Akwa Ibom State Government, under the leadership of Governor Pastor Umo Eno, to immortalize Chief Ukpong in honour of his enduring legacy.
“Chief Tony Ukpong stands in the ranks of the late Dele Giwa of blessed memory. Immortalizing him would serve as a beacon of hope to young journalists and affirm that there is indeed dignity in labour,” a speaker urged.
Chief Ukpong began his journalism career with the Federal Ministry of Information, working with top media outfits including The Guardian, Weekly Metropolitan, Punch, Vanguard, Tribune, and Republic Newspapers. He later founded The Sensor and Global Concord newspapers, further cementing his role as a media pioneer.
Hailing from Ndiya in Nsit Ubium Local Government Area, Chief Ukpong holds academic credentials from the University of Lagos, the Nigeria Institute of Journalism in Ogba, and the London School of Journalism. Despite his achievements, he humbly notes that he has never been appointed to any official role with remuneration in his 35-year career.
Governor Umo Eno had promised him an appointment on December 12, 2023, a pledge yet to be fulfilled, possibly due to the pressures of office.
Chief Tony Ukpong’s story is one of resilience, sacrifice, and undying passion for truth and justice, a legacy the NUJ has now fittingly honoured.
