A wave of shock and mourning has swept through Calabar following the sudden death of a police inspector who collapsed moments after watching his beloved Arsenal thrash Real Madrid 3-0 in a thrilling UEFA Champions League encounter.
The deceased, Inspector Stephen Enang, was a native of Ekori in Yakurr Local Government Area of Cross River State and served at the Akim Police Division along IBB Way, Calabar.
Eyewitnesses told reporters that the tragic incident occurred on Tuesday evening at a popular viewing centre along Abang-Asang Street. Enang, described as a die-hard Arsenal fan, was reportedly in high spirits throughout the match.
“He was overjoyed. Each time Arsenal scored, he jumped up and shouted. But after the final whistle, when people started leaving, we noticed he was still sitting motionless. That’s when we knew something was wrong,” said one of his close friends who was present at the scene.
Attempts to revive him reportedly failed, and he was later confirmed dead.
The incident has left residents and fellow officers in shock, as they mourn the sudden loss of a spirited officer and loyal football enthusiast.
