In a landmark event symbolizing renewed commitment to grassroots development, Akwa Ibom State Governor, Pastor Umo Eno, on Saturday, April 5, 2025, commissioned the iconic Eket City Hall and laid the foundation stone for the Ultramodern Eket Legislative Complex.
The triple-barreled ceremony, held at Ukwa Road, Eket, also featured the official launch of the Eket ARISE Empowerment Initiative SmallBiz Grant—a ₦50 million economic stimulus package aimed at supporting 500 entrepreneurs within the local government area.
Speaking on behalf of the Governor, the Honourable Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Hon. Frank Archibong, described the projects as a clear translation of the ARISE Agenda at the grassroots. He lauded Eket Council Chairman, Mr. Akaniyene Tommey, for his commitment to completing inherited projects and initiating new ones, including the empowerment initiative.
“This ₦50 million support for entrepreneurs is massive and unprecedented. It clearly demonstrates the ARISE Agenda in action,” Archibong stated, urging other council chairmen to emulate the Eket example.
The Chairman of ALGON, Akwa Ibom State, and Uyo Council Boss, Hon. Uwemedimo Udo, praised Tommey’s leadership, describing it as visionary and impactful. “What you have done today is a testimony to your commitment to hard work and SME growth,” he said.
Prominent sons and stakeholders of Eket, including former Minister and ex-lawmaker, Chief Nduese Essien; EPU President General, Chief Udonsak; Paramount Ruler of Eket, HRM Edidem E.C.D. Abia; and AKHA member, Dr. Nsidibe Akata, also commended the projects, calling for broader replication across the state.
In his address, Chairman Akaniyene Tommey emphasized that SMEs remain the backbone of Eket’s economy and assured continued support for local enterprises in line with Governor Umo Eno’s development blueprint.
He noted that the newly commissioned Eket City Hall would serve as a central hub for business, politics, and cultural events—enhancing the council’s IGR, boosting tourism, and creating employment opportunities.
“Having transitioned from the legislature to leading the executive arm, I understand the value of a strong legislative complex in effective local governance,” Tommey remarked.
The event marked a defining moment in Eket’s developmental journey, earning widespread commendation for the council chairman’s people-centered leadership style.
