In a heartfelt message delivered during the 2025 Thanksgiving Service of the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ), Akwa Ibom State Council, Governor Umo Eno called for unity and encouragement in supporting leadership for the growth of Akwa Ibom State. His Excellency’s remarks resonated as a powerful plea to both citizens and leaders to embrace collaboration and mutual respect.
Governor Eno emphasized the importance of encouragement in governance, saying, “It takes encouragement, and we should encourage everyone on this journey. Let us encourage our leaders.” He also reaffirmed his dedication to fulfilling his promises, stating, “I have shown you goodwill, I have shown commitment. I do not go back from what I say or promises I made.”
This commitment to transparency and accountability underscores the governor’s philosophy of fostering trust between leaders and citizens. However, his remarks also shed light on a troubling trend in today’s digital age, the destructive use of social media to undermine leaders through blackmail, false accusations, and character assassination.
Social media has undeniably democratized the sharing of opinions, but the misuse of these platforms has led to an alarming rise in baseless criticisms and personal attacks. The governor’s call for constructive engagement highlights the urgent need to address this toxic culture.
Rather than focusing on factual and constructive criticism, many individuals use social media as a platform for sensationalism, spreading misinformation that overshadows genuine concerns. This behavior not only dehumanizes leaders but also erodes societal trust in governance and institutions.
The negative impact of such actions is far-reaching. Leaders, like all individuals, are human and susceptible to emotional strain. Constant ridicule and unsubstantiated attacks on their character not only harm their mental well-being but also diminish their capacity to serve effectively.
Moreover, this culture of negativity creates a ripple effect. It undermines societal morale, sets a poor example for younger generations, and projects a fractured image of the state on national and global stages. When leaders are vilified publicly, it weakens the state’s standing and ability to collaborate on broader issues.
Governor Eno’s message serves as a reminder that holding leaders accountable should not equate to tearing them down. Respectful dialogue and constructive criticism are more effective avenues for driving change and fostering development.
The onus lies on all members of society, community organizations, parents, and elders, to educate the younger generation on the responsible use of social media. Freedom of expression must not be abused as a tool for falsehoods or malicious propaganda.
Leadership is a partnership. As Governor Eno rightly pointed out, encouragement and collaboration are critical in achieving progress. By choosing unity over division, Akwa Ibom State can continue to thrive and set an example for others to emulate.
As citizens, let us reject the destructive culture of tearing down leaders and instead embrace a spirit of mutual respect and positivity. Together, we can build a society where leadership flourishes and development knows no bounds.
