The Executive Chairman of Eket Local Government Area, Mkpisong Hon. Akaniyene Tommey, has initiated decisive measures to combat crime and bolster security within the area. These efforts aim to address pressing security challenges affecting the socioeconomic well-being of residents and the overall stability of the region.
In a meeting held with the Eket chapter of the Hotel Owners Association at the Local Government Council Hall, the Chairman emphasized the role of hotels in curbing criminal activities. He noted that inadequate documentation of guests has inadvertently allowed criminals to exploit these facilities as bases for planning and monitoring their targets.
“You should not only focus on doing business and making profits without considering the security of the environment where you operate,” Hon. Tommey said. “Most criminal activities are carried out by strangers, and they often lodge in hotels. Without proper records of these guests, efforts to eliminate bad elements will be futile.”
The Chairman urged hotel owners to collaborate with security agencies and ensure thorough documentation of all guests. He warned, “Failure to do so will make you liable for any security lapses.”
Hon. Tommey reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to prioritizing security and transforming Eket into a tourism hub that complements the efforts of Governor Umo Eno, who is working to make Akwa Ibom State a safe destination for tourism and investment. He also commended the hotel industry for its contributions to Eket’s economy, including the provision of job opportunities.
Security stakeholders, including the Divisional Police Officers of Eket (Uqua) and Ikot Udota, and representatives of the Department of State Services (DSS), lauded the Chairman’s proactive stance. They described the meeting as timely and urged hoteliers to report suspicious activities promptly and work closely with security agencies to deny criminals safe havens. “If you feel unsafe, report to the police,” they advised.
Of the 98 hotels operating in Eket, 48 were represented at the meeting. Managers and representatives expressed their gratitude to the Council Chairman for his dedication to creating a secure environment that fosters business growth and community well-being.
This move by the Eket Council marks a significant step toward addressing security challenges and ensuring a safer, more prosperous local government area.
